Located just 15 minutes south of Kansas City (“Paris of the Plains”) in Johnson County, Mission has the distinction of being the first suburb of Kansas City. Formerly Mission Hill Acres, Mission is known for its clear springs, safe community, and friendly atmosphere. It has a population of 10,000, but draws a “daytime population” of 50,000 to conduct business and shop.
Shopping And Dining
Mission boasts a plethora of shopping and dining options. Bella Roe Plaza, Corinth Square, and Dickinson Plaza serve resident’s every day needs. Downtown Mission Shops and Fairway Shops offer an eclectic array of boutiques and restaurants. Merriam Town Center and Prairie Village Shops provide shops and restaurants. Mission is just a few minutes from Oak Park Mall, Metcalf South Shopping Center, Country Club Plaza, Crown Center, Great Mall of the Great Plains, Town Center Plaza, and Westport Shops. Favorite restaurants in Mission offer everything from burgers at Winstead’s, Chinese at Fire Wok, Italian at Avelluto, pizza at d’Bronx, Thai at Thai Orchid, and American at Runza and Lucky Brewgrille.
Those who like to patronize their local businesses as much as possible have Main Street, which is full of specialty shops and restaurants unique to the area, such as the New 2 You Boutique, Furniture Revival, Daylight Donuts, and Tumbleweed Saloon Bar & Grill.
Parks And Recreation
The Mission Sustainability Commission has evaluated Mission’s progress toward fulfilling sustainability initiatives, reviewing programs and ensuring sustainability efforts. To this end, Mission’s parks and recreation reflect the city’s eco-endeavors. There are several parks, including Andersen, Broadmoor, Mohawk, Park on Beverly, Pearl Harbor, Streamway, and Waterworks. The Sylvester Powell Jr. Community Center offers classes and programs. Recreational programs include summer and school break camps, safety town, Red Cross swim lessons, and more. Mission’s annual events include Mission Arts and Eats Festival, Holiday Lights & Festival Sights, and Spirit of Mission Days. Other area attractions include Deanna Rose Children’s Farmstead, Kansas Speedway, the Harry S. Truman Home, Library & Museum, Kansas City Museum, Kansas City Jazz & Negro Leagues Baseball Museums, and Overland Park Arboretum & Botanical Gardens. The Hickory Hills/Merriam View neighborhood has real estate in the mid-100s. In the North Park neighborhood, homes for sale are in the mid-300s. Other desirable neighborhoods are Roe Manor Heights, Hunter Ridge, Broadmoor Park, Shawnee Mission, and Mission Highlands.
Schools, Health, Transportation
Mission is served by award-winning Shawnee Mission School District. Mission schools have received excellent GreatSchools ratings, including Rushton Elementary, Highlands Elementary, Mission Valley Middle School, Shawnee Mission East High School, and Shawnee Mission North High School. There are several private schools in the area as well. Johnson County Community College provides associates degrees. Shawnee Mission Medical Center, Saint Luke’s Health System, and St. Joseph Medical Center support Mission residents. Johnson County Transit (“The Jo”) provides public transportation and Kansas International Airport is a short drive away. Mission’s corridors are Routes 69 and 56, and Interstates 35 and 635.
